The Deep End – Encryption and Equity: A Global Call for Consumer Protection

Podcast Notes for Global Tech Swa

Encryption and Equity: A Global Call for Consumer Protection

With the risk of privacy breaches increasing daily, researchers continue to find that the dangers of such compromises disproportionately burden disenfranchised communities. In order to protect the most at-risk populations, lawmakers around the globe must tackle consumer protection issues one by one, especially the widespread efforts directed at privacy, content moderation, and online safety. During this discussion, we’re taking a look into how developers are harnessing existing digital protections, like encryption, to build secure products and how various pieces of legislation in the EU, UK, U.S., and around the globe can help or hinder the future safety of the app economy.

ACT | The App Association’s Amplify Diverse Talent Working Group is excited to bring you an opportunity to hear from speakers who will be highlighting issues around encryption, equity, and why policymakers should have a measured and mindful approach to consumer protection, privacy, and security issues.

 Speakers:

  • Graham Dufault, General Counsel, ACT | The App Association
  • Denise Tayloe, CEO & Co-Founder, PRIVO
  • Heather E. West, Senior Director for Cybersecurity and Privacy Services, Venable

Tech History

In celebration of Black History Month here in the U.S., we’re recognizing the accomplishments of Black technology innovators throughout history.

Hailing from Tennessee State University, historically black college and university (HBCU) graduate Jesse Russell acquired dozens of patents in wireless technology that was fundamental to the development of the modern cell phone. His inventions include the first digital cellular base station; his patents include those for the mobile data telephone and several for wireless communication.

American scientist and inventor Valerie Thomas graduated from Morgan State University (another HBCU) as one of only two women majoring in physics. Her love of math and science steered her to a career at NASA in 1964, where she led a team that developed an image processing system that sent the first satellite images to Earth. Thomas is also the creator and patent holder for an illusion transmitter, a technology still used today by NASA, surgeons, and TV screen producers that utilize concave mirrors to create a 3D image.

Check out our blog honoring the legacy of Black Americans in tech here.

Tech History

This tech history we’re taking a look at gifts from holidays past and comparing what gadgets were on wish lists 10, 20, and 30 years ago!

  • 10 years ago, in 2012, some of the top tech gifts for the year were the iPhone 5, the Wii U, and really anything from the “Angry Birds” universe.
  • Taking it back two decades, in 2002, the top tech gadgets and gifts were the 2nd generation iPod, TiVo with a one-time lifetime subscription, and the Nokia 6100 – one of the first cell phones with a color screen.
  • And 30 years ago, in 1992, some of the most cutting-edge pieces of tech you could give were the IBM ThinkPad – one of the first accessible laptops for home use, the Nintendo Gameboy (not color), and any CD you could get your hands on since 1992 was the year CD sales surpassed cassettes.
