“It’s a great time to be a developer” – for as long as I can remember, that has been the cheesiest and most common way to start the keynote presentation at a developer conference. It was a mantra that presenters would repeat over and over, even when they didn’t believe it. For a while, software had become boring and customers had become hard to reach. Phone apps have made computing more personal than ever. App stores make software as affordable and risk-free to enjoy as news or music. For small software developers, the sky is the limit: Over the holidays, more than 1.2 billion apps were downloaded. Today actually is a great time to be an app developer.
