WASHINGTON, D.C. – ACT | The App Association issued the following statement on the issuance of the new Executive Order regarding State AI laws:

“This has got to stop. We are stuck in the mud on AI policy in this country while others are racing ahead, and they aren’t our friends” said Morgan Reed, president of ACT | The App Association. “We can see where this approach will get us, because it is playing out in Europe. The EU’s AI law was ill defined and overly broad. Now small tech companies are seeing six-to-nine-month delays in accessing the latest tools, costing millions of Euros to the EU economy. We can’t have a patchwork of state AI laws that would create the same situation where innovative businesses in Utah don’t have the same tools as businesses in Georgia. And a lengthy court fight over the constitutionality of an Executive Order isn’t any better. Congress needs to enact a comprehensive, targeted, and risk-based national AI framework that balances innovation with responsible oversight. The EO directs the administration to work with Congress. For the sake of innovation, our members, and consumers Congress should act quickly. We have already waited too long.”
