WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today in a letter to newly confirmed Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) John Squires, ACT | The App Association and a diverse coalition of industry trade groups provided recommendations to support job creation and growth for American businesses.

“Now that John Squires has been confirmed, we look forward to working with him to advance U.S. innovation and competitiveness through intellectual property (IP) policy,” said Morgan Reed, president of ACT | The App Association. “In order for American small businesses to grow, we need a USPTO that supports standard-essential patent (SEP) licensing for all businesses, large and small, with limited injunctions. Second, we need a robust and well-resourced Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) that gives small businesses the ability to challenge bad patents. And finally, we need a USPTO that works on the global stage to protect the IP of American small businesses.”
