On 13 October ACT | The App Association continued its virtual App Makers Tour of Europe. After Romania, Germany, France, and Italy, we arrived in Spain!
During the event we had an open conversation with local app developers and policymakers about the functioning of today’s app ecosystem and our members shared their on-the-ground experience and their perspectives on the regulation of online platforms. The discussion did also dive into the ongoing digital policy efforts of the European Union (EU), including the Digital Markets Act (DMA). We talked about how the DMA can strike the right balance between maintaining the benefits delivered by digital platforms for small developers and addressing potential concerns arising from some of the practices towards the business users and customers.
We thank our panellists for making this a thought-provoking event. If you missed the event, a summary video and full recap blog is coming soon!

Why is the DMA important for you?
The EU is planning to implement additional laws targeting global online platforms with the DMA. These new rules will likely affect local players such as small app developers, tech SMEs, and potential future European digital champions.
The DMA could radically change how digital platforms can operate in the European Union. It will create new obligations for ‘gatekeeping’ platforms, which will have far-reaching consequences for the business models of those that operate on them, including small app developers and tech SMEs.
How can we help?
The App Association wants to improve your understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the app economy and which solutions our community of innovators can contribute. That’s why we want to bring the perspective and on-the-ground experience of our members into the conversation.
The App Association will present opening remarks before a panel of Spanish app makers opens the discussion. A question-and-answer session with participants will follow the panel. Tour events take place online and will include a discussion on the key principles for a functioning DMA.
