We’ve known for a while now that the app marketplace is a job creator – not just in the U.S., but also around the world. Last week, Apple announced it created or contributed 629,000 jobs across Europe, attributing over 500,000 of these to the app economy, as reported in ZDNet by Charlie Osborne.

We saw similar results in our 2013 study on the State of the European app economy.  Last year we found nearly 800,000 app-related jobs had been created in the EU.  The latest figures indicate this marketplace is expanding with Apple’s hardware playing a key role.  For a region that contributes 22 percent of app-related products and services worldwide, EU app makers have also generated a lot of revenue – an estimated €11.2 billion in 2013.

With the debut of the App Store in 2008, a new industry was born. For a marketplace only five years old, there’s no questioning the dramatic impact on the global economy. As the software market continues to grow on mobile platforms, job opportunities and revenues will follow, both in Europe and elsewhere.
