ACT | The App Association has noted Senator Al Franken’s privacy concerns about fingerprint scanners on mobile devices. The Senator is concerned about the Samsung S5 phone which allows broad use of the fingerprint function, often without the use of a password. It can be used to access apps and raises questions about third party access to biometric data.
While ACT may not agree with Senator Franken on all the issues, we have come to respect his thorough approach. Consumer and industry concerns often arise with new innovations like fingerprint scanning. Asking the right questions can help ensure that due consideration is given to the impact of emerging technologies.
