For EU Developers, App Store DMA Compliance Plan Presents Choices

Morgan Reed, president of ACT | The App Association, statement on Apple’s App Store DMA compliance plans:

“Following the passage of the DMA, we have been waiting to see what the compliance plans would mean for our members. Our global members with EU clients and customers got some of their answers this week.

“With more than 600 new APIs, a comprehensive cost calculator, and a pretty clear roadmap on tradeoffs, developers have spent the past week absorbing Apple’s announcement. For the vast majority of developers, the current system has worked well for their customers and consumers in general, and I expect that to continue.

“Apple’s new structure available for developers with customers in the EU adds additional options for developers who have been itching to try out different services, engage different payment models, or get access to certain features that Apple has historically protected. But those new choices do come with potential risks.

“Right now, Apple offers a one-stop-shop for app companies. The features work well, customers can trust they can easily cancel their subscription or get a refund.

“It’s important to note that DMA requirements were not driven by consumers. So, developers will have to wait and see if someone can create a product that makes use of it.”
