Membership Manager

Who we are:

ACT | The App Association represents more than 5,000 app makers and connected device companies in the mobile economy. Most of our members are small tech companies with passionate people who build apps that make the world better, more fun, and more efficient. You may already have some of their apps on your phone. Our team is professional, collaborative, and effective, and we are the leading industry resource on market strategy, regulated industries, privacy, and security.

 Who you are:

The App Association is seeking an energetic membership manager with some experience with trade associations, or similar membership-driven organizations, as well as experience with membership databases. You are excited about building relationships with the tech innovators and entrepreneurs who are our members. You are interested in researching companies around the United States that are doing new and interesting work in technology, including in connected health and the internet of things.

You will be primarily responsible for communicating with App Association members about our programs, resources, and initiatives, and identifying and activating appropriate members on key issues. You will work with the director of membership and member communications manager to find appropriate companies for special projects and events and will spearhead member engagement, including identifying areas of interest and concern for members, and the development of relevant resources for members. You will research potential association members, conduct initial outreach to potential members, and maintain the member database. This position reports to the director of membership.

Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years’ experience
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills with a good attention to detail, including copyediting skills
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently but also collaborate with staff at various levels
  • An interest in tech policy and a curiosity about tech and the small businesses that drive the app economy.

Director of Communications

Our team is professional, collaborative, and effective, and we are the leading industry resource on market strategy, regulated industries, privacy, and security.

Who you are:
The App Association is seeking a dynamic communications director with experience leading communications campaigns and managing media relations, preferably working in or with technology companies. The position provides an excellent opportunity for a candidate looking for a hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment. You will be primarily focused on communicating the App Association’s position on a variety of issues on behalf of more than 5,000 app makers across the country.

You will serve as the primary point of contact for the media and be responsible for ensuring communications needs are met across all departments. In addition to working with tech press, you will be doing outreach to national, Hill, and targeted local publications. Our stories matter to both policymakers and to our members who read industry publications covering a variety of issues in the tech space, including privacy, health, intellectual property, and education. Our team and our members will count on you to communicate our perspectives and concerns in a way that is effective and compelling to policymakers and other stakeholders.

You are proactive and creative, a problem-solver with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. You have a knack for understanding what kind of stories different journalists and publications are interested in, and you will be able to present our stories and initiatives in a way that generates great coverage. You know when to push and when to take an alternate approach, and you have a habit of investing in long-term relationships and building trust.

Qualifications :

  • 3 – 6 years’ experience in communications and/or marketing
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills with a good attention to detail, including copyediting skills
  • Demonstrated experience successfully working with the media and maintaining relationships with reporters
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently but also collaborate with staff at various levels
  • Demonstrated experience managing and executing social media across a variety of platforms that supports organizational goals
  • Familiarity with HTML and front-end website management
  • Requires initiative, flexibility, and creativity
  • Must have good time management skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while handling numerous projects and deadlines
  • Experience with Meltwater, Cision, or other similar media monitoring and outreach tool


Responsibilities:

  • Lead outreach to media and manage relationships with reporters
  • Strategize external communications plans and evolution of branding and messaging
  • Collaborate across departments to ensure communications goals and needs are met
  • Write, edit, and provide design guidance for external documents and initiatives including blogs, opinion pieces, industry reports, Capitol Hill briefing materials, developer events, and congressional testimony
  • Draft talking points for interviews, timely policy / news topics
  • Manage relationships and collaborate with outside PR firms and vendors
  • Manage press clips / media hits; share as appropriate
  • Manage media-related / external content on the website, including ‘In the News’ section, blog, publications, staff page, overall copy
  • Create and execute social media campaigns; collaborate with designer
  • Write and edit content and proposals as needed
  • Pitch relevant App Association staff for speaking engagements; manage back and forth with event hosts as needed
  • Represent organization to members of the media, sponsors, congressional staff, and other industry stakeholders
