Membership Programs Coordinator

ACT | The App Association is a global policy trade association for small and medium-sized technology companies. Who you are:

The App Association is seeking an energetic membership programs coordinator who is curious about and interested in learning more about the startup ecosystem, app economy, and how they intersect with tech policy. The ideal candidate is interested in learning about companies, startups, and entrepreneurs around the globe and helping to identify what they need to continue to push the limits of innovation. In addition, we’re seeking a candidate with an interest in social media and creating content for specific audiences and platforms as well as understanding and identifying the trends and opportunities on those platforms.

What to expect:

The membership programs coordinator supports the day-to-day functions of membership programs, initiatives, and communications. The membership coordinator has two primary goals: identifying gaps in our global membership and finding companies and related organizations for recruitment, and supporting the creation and execution of social media content for and about members. This position reports to the senior director for global membership. Responsibilities will include:

  • Learning about tech policy, our membership, and the app economy
  • Researching potential members around the globe
  • Researching and identifying gaps in our membership
  • Database management
  • Following and identifying social media trends related to tech and startups
  • Assisting with content creation, including crafting social media posts, newsletters, and educational materials
  • Assisting with event planning
  • Travel and member recruitment support

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1-2 years of related experience
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative team environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail
  • Experience with research and identifying search parameters
  • Experience using social media
  • An interest in tech policy and a curiosity about tech and the small businesses that drive the app economy
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently
  • Experience using a CRM or online database is preferred but not required
  • Experience with graphic design platforms, including Canva, is preferred but not required
  • Ability to travel internationally and domestically as needed

Location:

This position is based in a traditional office setting in Washington, DC, subject to the organization’s telework policy.  Currently, the organization is operating in a hybrid environment (3 (three) days in office; 2 (two) days remote).

Compensation:

Competitive salary range based on experience:  $55,000-$60,000.  The complete benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, 401k, commuter benefits, cell phone, and home internet reimbursement.

Policy Associate, Europe

Our team is professional, collaborative, and effective, and we are the leading industry resource on market strategy, regulated industries, privacy, and security.

Who you are:

The App Association is seeking an entrepreneurial and strategic European policy associate who is curious about and interested in the legal and policy issues affecting the small business software and Internet of Things industry. You will support the association’s day-to-day activities in Europe and help drive its advocacy efforts on various policy issues, such as privacy, platform competition, intellectual property, artificial intelligence, and standards. You will be responsible for drafting the App Association’s advocacy materials and policy positions in Europe for related comment and engagement opportunities, as well as supporting general strategy and advocacy activities and representing the App Association in public-facing events and other forums where needed. The role requires a deep understanding of the policy context in the EU, including selected Member States, as well as the United Kingdom, of the key policy issues affecting the digital industry in Europe, and exceptional writing skills in English. You will be part of a dynamic international team across time zones. This position is based in Brussels and works in close coordination with our team based in Belgium, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Responsibilities:

  • Track, analyse, and anticipate relevant policy and regulatory developments in Europe in the field of digital technology which affects our members’ ability to innovate and grow their businesses
  • Identify opportunities for regulatory filings and comment submissions in the EU, Member States, and the UK to contribute to conversations on policies affecting the app ecosystem
  • Research and draft regulatory filings, letters, public consultation responses, position papers, and blogs and manage the review and submission of written items to government authorities
  • Develop documents that explain to our membership how policy issues around security, intellectual property, competition, and antitrust, artificial intelligence, privacy, and encryption apply to modern software development
  • Support the execution of advocacy initiatives and strategies as the European public policy landscape evolves across a wide range of venues and issues
  • Represent the App Association in meetings with government officials across a variety of venues, business coalitions, public events, and panels when needed
  • Engage with key policy stakeholders in Brussels, the Member States, and the UK, including trade associations, companies, and civil society
  • Support organization of policy-related briefings, meetings, and other events with the support of internal teams
  • Understand and educate stakeholders on issues affecting the small businesses innovator community in Europe
  • Help to position the App Association as a reliable expert with government, civil society, academia, and other relevant stakeholders on policy issues affecting the app ecosystem 

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of professional experience in legal, public policy, government affairs, advocacy, or political roles
  • Strong research and writing skills, experience in analysing regulation and drafting policy documents
  • Familiarity with legislative processes in the EU and the UK and/or experience working with EU or United Kingdom policymakers is a plus
  • Strong knowledge and interest in technology policy issues and their interplay with small business innovators
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally and independently with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to analyse and think strategically
  • Strong English verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail; additional languages are an asset
  • Self-starter with the ability to effectively handle multiple tasks
  • Willingness to travel to other European countries and the United States as needed
  • The ability to live and work in Belgium
  • JD or advanced degree or equivalent experience

Director of Global Communications

Who you are:

The App Association is seeking a dynamic director of global communications with experience in both developing and executing global communications campaigns and managing media relations, preferably working in or with technology companies. The position provides an excellent opportunity for a candidate looking for hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment. You will be primarily focused on communicating the App Association’s positions on various issues on behalf of app makers worldwide.

You have experience managing communications resources and will be responsible for managing our design and communications consultants, with the opportunity to build an in-house communications team. You will serve as the primary lead for global communications and marketing strategy, working with internal team members and outside vendors to ensure consistent message, brand, and tactics across all regions. In addition to media relations, you will oversee the marketing of our association through various channels such as our website, social presence, and advertising. Our team and our members will count on you to help them communicate our perspectives and concerns in a way that is effective and compelling to policymakers, allied industries, and the general public.

You are proactive and creative, a problem-solver with the ability to manage and lead personnel along with multiple projects simultaneously. You have a knack for understanding what kind of stories different journalists and publications are interested in, and you will be able to present our association and initiatives in a way that fits the audience and purpose. You know when to push and when to take an alternate approach, and you have a habit of investing in long-term relationships and building trust. You will report directly to the executive director. This position is based in our Washington, DC, office.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead on outreach to media, including managing relationships with reporters, drafting of external and internal communications materials, and providing overall media strategy for all regions
  • Evaluate and manage third-party vendors related to communications, public relations, and graphic/web design
  • Strategize and execute external communications plans for all regions
  • Maintain and continue to evolve branding and organizational messaging across all regions
  • Collaborate across departments to ensure communications goals and needs are met
  • Oversee project management of creative for external documents and initiatives including blogs, opinion pieces, industry reports, and policymaker briefing materials
  • Manage relationships and collaborate with outside PR firms and vendors
  • Manage the creation and execution of social media campaigns including visual elements, budgets, and audience targeting
  • Write and edit content and proposals as needed
  • Pitch relevant App Association staff for speaking engagements; manage back and forth with event hosts as needed
  • Pitch relevant App Association staff for speaking engagements with media, sponsors, policymakers, and other industry stakeholders

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years’ experience in communications and/or marketing
  • Experience leading and developing globally coordinated campaigns a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with proven attention to detail, including copyediting skills
  • Demonstrated experience successfully working with the media and maintaining relationships with reporters
  • Demonstrated experience in navigating in high-engagement situations with the media and with the general public
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to not only work independently but also collaborate with staff at various levels
  • Demonstrated experience managing creative campaigns including social media, web presence, and digital advertising through coordination with vendors
  • Must have good time management skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment while handling numerous projects and deadlines
  • Experience with media monitoring and outreach tools
  • Understanding of global cultural nuances in professional communication, balancing regional effectiveness with a consistent message
  • Fluent in English and familiar with nuances of grammar and style in the EU and UK; additional language skills a plus

Location:
