Empower Parents Over Platforms – No on H.R. 3149, the App Store Accountability App
Here’s What YOU Need to Know About H.R. 3149 – the App Store Accountability Act:
An unconstitutional mandate that does nothing to help parents keep their kids safe online is a waste of time.
H.R. 3149, the App Store Accountability Act would impose unsustainable compliance costs on small businesses, create serious privacy and security risks for everyone – adults and minors alike – all while failing to achieve its stated goals.
There is a better way.
What’s At Stake for American Small Businesses:
- Apps have opened a world of possibilities for small businesses and independent software makers.
- Now, some politicians in Washington are being misled and pushing a bill that makes doing business more costly AND makes the internet less safe for everyone.
- Rather than providing American small businesses with opportunities for growth, H.R. 3149 drives up costs.
- And rather than increasing safety online, it increases legal liability for local small businesses.
- H.R. 3149 forces apps to collect and store age data, putting kids’ information at greater risk from hackers and thieves.
- With some reasonable changes, lawmakers can confidently advance a pragmatic and privacy-protective framework that empowers parents without crushing small businesses or stifling innovation.
- A better approach is the bipartisan Parents Over Platforms Act (POPA, H.R. 6333), which applies reasonable age assurance requirements to apps that are most likely to pose age-related risks.
