We may have spent more time at home during the last year, but winding down or finding rest seems to have become more difficult for some. While mindfulness may be a new concept to many, Imma Juan has been researching and practising it for over a decade. A journalist by trade, Imma was taking a digital business course when she had the idea for a health app that combined her interest in mindfulness and her communication skills. So, when the company she worked for shut down in 2015, Imma created her own opportunity – and that’s how Intimind was born.
After sharing her idea with her fellow cofounder – Javier Abuja – in 2015, they immediately got to work on the development of Intimind. Not long after that, the first version of the app went live on the App Store in 2016. Today the two-person team is still located in Puçol, near the city of Valencia, Spain, where Intimind was founded. Javier and Imma plan and generate the app’s content and user experience, and coordinate the app development with a contracted team of developers.
Each Intimind exercise or guided meditation has been developed by psychologists and mindfulness experts. In just ten to 20 minutes a day, Intimind programs allow anyone to improve their mental well-being wherever they are, whenever they want. The programs are designed to train attention and improve skills like empathy, creativity, and concentration. For beginners, Intimind offers seven free meditations. For users with a specific goal in mind, Intimind offers four tailored programs ranging from “health and stress” to “emotional balance”. Users can also purchase specific programs on their own. In total, the app contains more than 200 meditations that can be accessed with a monthly or an annual subscription.
Intimind users range from those who struggle with managing their stress levels to those hoping to be more productive at work. Because the app is user-focused and solution-oriented, the feedback they receive through ratings on the App Store and Google Play are crucial. The feedback the team receives allows Imma and Javier to more easily improve the user experience by helping them to determine the ideal duration of voice parts and quiet times, or which music to play during mediation. This allows users to have an experience that best fits what they need to rest their minds and connect with themselves. As one of the only exclusively Spanish language apps on the market, Intimind is active across all Spanish-speaking markets.
Over the past five years, Intimind has reached more than 50,000 users across app stores to help improve mental health and lower stress. Their use of the “freemium” business model has allowed the company to grow continuously, and today the team at Intimind is ready to take their mission to the next level by thinking big, continuing to improve their product, and retaining their position as one of Spain’s leading certified health apps.
Intimind is a great example of the opportunities the app economy provides for all kinds of innovators and shows how apps can improve our lives. We are proud to have Intimind as a member and look forward to seeing what this year has in store for them.
