In my introductory post for We Wear It, I said that part of our goal for the 99 days is to help people learn about the wide variety of wearable devices that are available, their various capabilities, how they work for different lifestyles, and how all of this health and fitness data fits into the policy picture. In other words, it’s more than just steps.

And this week’s wearable really is more than just steps.

Wearable: Lumo Lift

Who’s Wearing It: Melissa and Katherine

What It Does: Coaches you for good posture, and tracks activity like steps and distance

Our recent renovation brought sit-stand desks to the ACT | The App Association offices, and a few of us realized that working on our feet was good – but standing properly was more difficult.

Enter the Lumo Lift. Worn attached to clothing and positioned just below your collarbone, the Lift does the following:

  • Tracks and helps correct your posture
  • Tracks steps, distance
  • Estimates calories burned

How? Stand straight with shoulders back and head high (envisioning mom telling your 13-year-old self to stand up straight!), and you calibrate the device with a quick double-press. That is now your benchmark for correct posture.

Via the Lift app, set a timer for how long you can be slouching before the device vibrates to alert you (Lumo recommends two minutes), and how long you want the coaching session to be – two hours, all day, whatever. And re-calibration when you change activities, like going from standing to sitting, is done with another double-press. Press the Lift a little longer to discreetly shut off the sessions, if needed.

All of this translates into “good posture hours” and tracks your progress depending on your daily goal.  (We started with a goal of four good posture hours per day.)

Since it tracks steps and distance as well, you can wear the Lift all day but only have the coaching sessions on for part of it. The app also connects to MyFitnessPal and MapMyRun to report calories and steps.

Daily emails from the Lumo BodyTech team provide encouragement and inspiration. They include updates on accomplishments, show trends of when you’re more active or sedentary, provide stretching routines, and daily mini-challenges.  As Katherine tweeted, “My Lumo Lift is my biggest fan!”
