Governments around the world are using uncertainty surrounding U.S. law enforcement data collection to stall American exports. Unfortunately, unclear laws governing U.S. law enforcement access to data on non-Americans stored abroad has limited opportunities for our companies. In fact, some nations are using this confusion as an excuse to pursue requirements for domestic-only cloud storage or data localization.
These requirements would not only hurt U.S. internet companies, but also the thousands of businesses that depend on the cloud to store everything from customer records to production line information. Updating our outdated privacy laws is critical to restore the confidence of our trading partners and preserve our ability to compete internationally.
